American music critic, author, teacher, and poet, who was much engaged in the study and promotion of 20th century American avant-garde music. Yates was principal organizer of "Evenings on the Roof," a series of chamber concerts presented in Los Angeles, and he served as chair of the music department at Buffalo State College.
